This method is based on the fact that lean body tissue is more electrically conductive than fat tissue, because lean tissue contains more water. A Bio-Impedance meter is typically attached to one foot and one hand (using
self-adhesive,
disposable electrodes). The meter measures a miniscule current passed between the electrodes to derive resistance. The more fat, the higher the resistance. One advantage of this method is that everyone can do it, no expertise is required.
Bio-Impedance meters use built-in microprocessors or typical PC's to calculate body fat and lean mass from the resistance measurement. Measurement accuracy is usually compared to those achieved by Hydrostatic Weighing, validation studies indicate error factors around 3 to 10%. State-of-the-art systems utilize an algorithmic approach coupled with specific anthropometric measurements to further define body fat measurements. Five or six additional variables are entered into the algorithmic formula to improve the accuracy and reliability across a wide range of subjects. The "ELG" meter listed below is an attractively
priced example.
Most manufacturers of Bio-Impedance meters warn that dehydration will cause errors, so test subjects are advised to drink adequate fluids but refrain from alcohol and caffeine-containing drinks.
Prices vary from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Meters with built-in microprocessors and printers tend to be more expensive but not more accurate.
The ELG' s small size (12 x 14 x 4 cm) and low weight (4 ounces) make it very portable. All you need is a PC with Windows and you have the easiest to use, yet most sophisticated system.
Model 17080 is a stand-alone impedance calculator, you then enter the impedance value into the supplied "Windows" software. The software then calculates bodyfat, etc. values and prints a report from the PC.
PC (Windows) software includes the following modules:
- Body Composition Module
- Nutrition Module
- Aerobic Exercise Module
- Resistance Exercise Module (Rehab)
Model 17081 adds the Quick-Print module which does not require a PC.
Model 17082 includes the ELG-II and Quick Print module but no PC software.
17081 and 17082 are ideal for Health Fairs.

We can fax datasheets for either system.
A DOS version of the software in Spanish is available
